Day 1: Nairobi
The name Nairobi comes from the maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi which refers to the Nairobi river that flows through the city and it translates to “cool water” In a century it has grown from uninhabited swampland to a thriving modern city and the country’s capital. It is the only city in the world where you can see wildlife in their natural habitat. Nairobi is known as the wildlife capital. A short drive from Nairobi central business district you get to the wide open grasslands at the city’s backdrop which play host to a variety of wildlife i.e. the lions, leopards, cheetahs, endangered black rhino, hyenas amongst other animals.
For the avid bird watchers there are over 400 bird species recorded in his park
Nearby is the David Sheldrick Wildlife trust a centre devoted to conserving East Africa’s wildlife and habitats. Orphaned elephants and other animals find a home here where they are nurtured until they can start enjoying the life they deserve again.
About three kilometers from here is the Giraffe centre, which protects the highly endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. You can observe, hand feed or even kiss one of the giraffes from a secure raised wooden structure. Karen Blixen museum. The farm house gained international fame with the release of the Oscar winning movie “out of Africa”
